Dear Sisters and Brothers of Shepherd of the Hill,
Last weekend, erroneous statements were published via X (formerly Twitter) regarding Lutheran Social Services (LSS) and Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services (now called Global Refuge). Unsubstantiated accusations of money laundering and fraud were made by leadership of the U.S. Department of Governmental Efficiency (DOGE), damaging the reputation of not just the 157-year-old mission of Lutheran Social Services and the 85-year-old mission of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, but also the long-standing mission and ministry of the ELCA and the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.
